When should a tech startup invest in a full brand system vs a basic identity?

Before Series A: a name, a basic identity, and a one-page narrative. The ICP will shift. The positioning will evolve. Investing in a full system before those are locked means rebuilding it. After Series A: the full system is justified if the brand is doing commercial work — enterprise sales, investor evaluation, competitive talent acquisition — that a basic identity cannot support. The test: is the brand being encountered by people who cannot be corrected by the founder in real time?
