Most rebrands go wrong not because the design was bad, but because a step was skipped. A rebrand touches strategy, identity, website, messaging, internal alignment, and launch — and the failures almost always trace to something missed early. Here's the checklist we run, from the first “should we?” to launch day and after.

Phase 1 — Decide (before you spend anything)

  • Name the business trigger: a pivot, a raise, a move upmarket, a merger. If you can't, you may need a refresh, not a rebrand.
  • Confirm it's a strategy problem, not just a visual one — most rebrands that fail start from the logo.
  • Check readiness: is the business direction settled enough to build a brand on? (Our rebrand-readiness audit helps.)
  • Secure C-suite alignment by leading with the “why,” not the logo.

Phase 2 — Diagnose & strategise

  • Audit the current brand: positioning, name, identity, messaging, website — and where each is failing.
  • Define the buyer now (not 18 months ago), what they must believe, and the objections the new positioning must answer.
  • Lock positioning and messaging before any design. This is the part that makes everything else work.
  • Decide name and brand architecture: keep, refresh, or rename; branded house or endorsed.

Phase 3 — Design the system

  • Explore visual routes; choose a language, not a layout.
  • Build the full identity system — logo, colour, type, iconography, imagery, motion, guidelines.
  • Rewrite website messaging and IA around the new positioning — the site is where buyers meet the rebrand.
  • Preserve the equity worth keeping; rebrand without burning recognition you've earned.

Phase 4 — Build & migrate

  • Rebuild the website; plan 301 redirects and protect SEO through the migration.
  • Update every touchpoint: product UI, decks, email, social, collateral, signage.
  • Prepare the internal rollout — employees are your first ambassadors; brief them before launch.
  • Draft customer communication so existing clients understand the change before they notice it.

Phase 5 — Launch & measure

  • Launch across channels on one date; don't leak the old brand alongside the new.
  • Activate: the launch is a beginning, not an end — bring the brand to life across events, sales enablement, and content.
  • Measure the right signals: faster understanding and reduced perceived risk show up before revenue does.
